Literacy

The emphasis in literacy classes is on individual tuition. The content meets the learning needs of the individual. This could cover spelling, punctuation, grammar, letter writing, form filling or CV preparation. Classes are varied and may include:

English - classes at South Downs College or Leigh Park Learning Centre English - Improve Your Skills classes at various venues in the community
English with IT - for learners who wish to improve their English skills using the computer and the Internet
Creative Writing - for learners interested in developing their creative writing skills
Family History - a chance for learners to improve their English skills while researching the internet and finding out about their own family history
Local History - for learners interested in gaining an English qualification while learning about the history of Portsmouth and the surrounding areas
Healthy Living - for learners who wish to learn about healthy eating and exercise while gaining an English qualification

Numeracy

The aim is to improve skills on a variety of topics including number, measuring, data work, fractions, decimals, percentages and much, much more.

The work matches the learning needs of individual learners. Classes are varied e.g.:

Flexi maths classes at South Downs College or Leigh Park Learning Centre
Maths - Improve Your Skills classes at various venues in the Community
Maths Through Language - for learners whose first language is not English. Students have the opportunity to work on their maths skills as well as improving their language skills. For this course, a good understanding of English is needed for Level 1 and above.
Maths Through IT - for learners who would like to brush up on their maths skills largely using the computer and the Internet.

ESOL

These courses are for learners whose first language is not English. The levels range from Entry 1 to Level 2. The courses cover a wide range of topics and help you to improve your English language skills. There will be a Cambridge examination at the end of the course for all learners.

The courses will focus on speaking and listening, reading and writing and will also address your individual needs. For example, involve helping you with speaking and listening in a variety of everyday situations, grammar, improving your reading comprehension or your writing skills.
