Catering and Hospitality Curriculum Achieves Gold!

Students and staff from the Catering Curriculum area at South Downs College are celebrating the achievement of accreditation as one of the UK’s top Catering and Hospitality educational ‘Centres of Excellence’.

The Gold accreditation and Centre of Excellence status has been awarded by People 1st, the Catering industry’s sector skills council, after an in depth inspection by a team from the organisation assisted by an AA Hotel Services Inspector. The accreditation system recognises and celebrates excellence in the delivery of training and qualifications, and brings together employers and providers in partnership to help raise the professionalism of the hospitality industry.

Colleges and providers approved can use their accredited status as a way to attract new learners, while the logo demonstrates to employers that an organisation is acknowledged as one of the best places to develop skilled staff to meet their business needs.

Endorsed by the Hospitality Guild (the first organisation of its kind supported by the Government to represent the sector in the UK) the accreditation is awarded at three different levels: Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Only four other UK Colleges have been successful in achieving Gold status of which three are Centres of Excellence. The Gold accreditation recognises ‘colleges and providers that achieve the best in their class and demonstrate a progressive and sustainable commitment to matching learners’ skills with employers’ needs.

Gold standard colleges and providers will take an above average and pro-active approach to the continued professional development of their staff and showcase effective and collaborative industry working partnerships’.

In addition South Downs College has been accredited as a centre of excellence in Food Services “Excelling in the delivery of specific skills, increasing employers’ confidence that their needs will be met in specialist areas through clear development pathways and direct links to industry.”

An AA Hotel Services Inspector was also involved in carrying out the assessment visit as part of the accreditation process. AA Hotel Services are developing a rosette system, similar to that already established in industry, which will recognise college restaurants for the quality of the food produced and the level of service delivered. The feedback on the South Downs College Restaurant was highly complimentary.

In a recent press release, Regional Food Services inspector with the AA, Garry Baldwin adds: “The recognised award in industry will provide an element of familiarity within the realistic working environments assessed. This scheme is part of the AA Hotel Services plan to help raise professionalism in the industry through skilled staff that meet employer’s needs. The grading experience with learners will naturally assist with this”.

Gerry Shurman, Head of Catering, Hospitality and Travel at the College, said, “The Gold accreditation is recognition of our outstanding achievement over the years during which we have become a leading centre for Catering and Hospitality education. This award has been a fantastic boost to our magnificent students who, supported by a committed teaching team and outstanding facilities, have achieved so much! The students are elated by the accolade which will result in a whole range of benefits and increased opportunities to progress their studies and careers in the Hospitality Industry.”

Annette Allmark, Head of Accreditation at People 1st, said, “I want to offer my congratulations on a very positive outcome and excellent feedback from the assessor and the AA.”

The Presentation of Certificates to mark accreditation will take place on Tuesday 12 March at the People 1st/PACE National conference in Nottingham in front of over 300 employers and representatives of Hospitality Education and Training centres.
