Here at South Downs College we're committed to providing the best possible learning experience for our students. Striving to make your time at college an interactive and engaging one with our purpose built teaching facilities.

Aeroplane fuselage

The SDC Air cabin is a real fuselage section from a Boeing 747, providing our students the opportunity to train and and ‘fly’ serving up to fifty five passengers. This is the only one of its type in a UK College and is equipped to current aviation standards.

Animal management facilities

Our animal care facilities have been designed and built especially for teaching Animal Care and Animal Management Courses with animal housing and large glass vivaria built into the walls. This room houses reptiles such as snakes, lizards and bearded dragons as well as rodents including chinchillas, rats and degus. Outside there is a large yard with aviaries, a stable and a pond. There is also a large grassed area containing runs for ferrets, rabbits and chickens.

Art & Design studios

Our art and design facilities provide specialist areas of provision for both Vocational and A level students. These include graphic design suites with Apple Mac computers and the latest Adobe design software, and a specialist printing studio with a 160 year old Albion flat bed press and silk screen developing unit. Our ample sized textile design studios contain sewing machines, knitting machines, dyeing facilities and a heat press. We also have 3D design studios and kiln firing facilities for students who want to work in plaster, clay, fused glass, wood and metal.

College restaurant and kitchens

Linked with Angela Hartnett’s culinary academy and recognised locally and nationally as a dynamic, innovative and highly successful training environment our restaurant and kitchen facilities provide a realistic work environment. Our catering facilities include three state of the art kitchens with the latest equipment, with a dedicated pastry production area equipped with specialist bakery and pastry ovens.

Engineering & Automotive workshops

Our engineering department has four workshop areas with Engineering, Electronic and Automotive resources. Each classroom is equipped with industry specific software and equipment allowing students to improve their practical skills ready for the working environment.

Hair salon & beauty treatment rooms

Students will have the opportunity to learn within a fully operational salon environment with facilities including beauty salons, hairdressing areas and a specialist nail treatment room.

Media suites

Our media department has two dedicated editing suites complete with industry leading software packages. Our students have access to high quality cameras for the creation of HD broadcast quality video, a range of professional sound kits and microphone technologies. We also have a range of production tools and rigging such as green screens, dolly and tracks, flycam and crane systems and studio lighting.

Music facilities

Our music facilities include a concert standard recital room with acoustically tuned surfaces to allow for a range of music to be performed, from solo classic to rock music. We also have music classrooms, practice rooms and industry standard recording studios.

Outdoor equipment

Our outdoor courses have numerous opportunities for students to utilise our outdoor facilities. Facilities include a 7.5 metre climbing wall with abseil platform, rock climbing equipment, a fleet of kayaks, canoes, surfboards and camping equipment.

Theatre and Dance studios

We have a fully functional Theatre and Studio Theatre providing a realistic working environment for Acting, Musical Theatre and Dance students. The theatre is complete with a state of the art lighting rig, scenic construction area and large wardrobe of theatrical costumes. We also have a number of dance studios, both with sprung dance floors and tap floors which are used for teaching.
