Higher Education at South Downs College

Have you been thinking of a new career or maybe you are wanting to progress to the next level in your job? Have you finished your A levels or Level 3 course and are looking for an employability-focussed alternative to university? Or do you want to learn something completely new for yourself? Then Higher Education (HE) could be the right path for you.

South Downs College has been delivering HE courses for over 10 years, and we currently offer courses in 18 subjects. Being able to study locally and part-time allows you the flexibility to work whilst you study for your qualification. HE at South Downs College is also a more affordable alternative to University.

Why study Higher Education at South Downs College?

South Downs College is a provider of Higher Education teaching at levels 4 (HNC) and 5 (HND). These are both pre-degree level qualifications that could help further your employment prospects. Unlike many degrees, these courses are vocationally focussed and therefore can lead straight on to a career.

On-site we have excellent, modern facilities to accompany your course. This ranges from laboratories and kennels for Animal Management, to brand new recording studios in Music. Similar to University, South Downs College has a student union, many cafes, a gym and a well-stocked library to name just a few of the provisions available to our students. We also have a track record of success, owed partly to the smaller class sizes we are able to accommodate.

The qualifications explained

A foundation degree is the equivalent of two thirds of a full honours degree. It is also a fully flexible qualification, allowing students to study part-time or full-time to fit their lifestyle. A foundation degree combines academic study with work place learning. Designed in association with employers, they are qualifications to equip people with the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to achieve academic results as well as improve performance and productivity in the work place.

Fees explained

HNC/HND/Foundation Degree

If you would like to apply for a Higher Education course, you will be required to pay the advertised fees in full. To help pay for these fees you may be entitled to a government approved Student Loan. You would need to apply to Student Finance England directly to receive this.

Whether you qualify for student finance depends on:

  • Your course of study (if you’ve studied a higher education course before)
  • Your age
  • Your nationality or residency status.

Generally, you’ll only get student finance if you’re doing your first higher education qualification. This is true even if your previous course was self-funded. To receive Tuition Fee Loans or grants, you will have to be under the age of 60 years at the start of the course.

The course must be one of the following to be eligible for the loan:

  • a Foundation Degree (FdA)
  • a Certificate of Higher Education (Cert Ed)
  • a Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE)
  • a Higher National Certificate (HNC)
  • a Higher National Diploma (HND)
  • a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE)
  • Initial Teacher Training

Most full-time and part-time students can apply online to Student Finance England as follows:

  1. Set up a student finance account online.
  2. Log in and complete the online application.
  3. Include details of your household income and ask your parents (or partner) to support your application, if needed.
  4. Send in proof of identity, if required.
  5. Sign and return the loan declaration, which you should receive within six weeks.
