Travel & Tourism is one of the world’s most important sectors and employers; it has also been one of the leading growth sectors since the impact of the industry was first measured by the World Travel and Tourism Council some 20 years ago.

It is one of the world's largest industries, employing more than 235 million people worldwide and generating some 9.4% of global economic output. In the UK this is 3 million jobs, 1 in every 12, and 8.9% of economic output.

Over the years, our students have successfully gained employment in all areas of the industry; ranging from visitor attractions to holiday camps, travel agencies to cruise ships, and airlines to tour operators.

The excellent facilities at South Downs provide a realistic working environment enabling tourism students to prepare for future success. Locally, there will be career opportunities in the new Bournemouth Airport Terminal, within the cruise sector in the new Portsmouth passenger terminal, as well as a wide variety of jobs available within tourism sites in Portsmouth and the surrounding area.

In the longer run, Travel & Tourism will sustain its leading role in driving global growth, creating jobs and alleviating poverty. Emerging economies will boost both international and domestic travel. In developed countries, leisure is expected to provide clients for new destinations once consumers fully regain confidence, while the popularity of short breaks – both domestic and international – will continue to increase. We explore and investigate all of these areas through our courses here at South Downs.

The industry is at the forefront of innovation and will continue to create new products and markets and consequently employment; we encourage our students to adopt an innovative approach to their studies and reflect this in our teaching.

By 2020 Travel and Tourism is expected to account for some 300 million jobs worldwide and 10% of global economic output. This confirms that Travel & Tourism will continue to grow in importance as one of the world’s highest-priority sectors and employers – so there’s never been a better time to get on board and prepare for an exciting and rewarding career in a fast moving and dynamic industry.
