South Downs College Fitness Centre is open to the public and includes a fully equipped gym and studio for exercise classes.

Whether your goal is fitness, weight loss or bulking up to muscle gain, we have the equipment, knowledge and staff to help you achieve it.

The Centre is managed for Ashley by Claire Turner. The Fitness Centre is under the management of the Sport and Public Services Department and a highly experienced Curriculum Manager, Ashley Grute.

The gym is supervised by qualified Fitness Instructors or Personal Trainers, and our classes are run by qualified instructors.

The Centre has two technicians that look after the day-to-day running, Claire Turner and Jess Hathaway.

Is a floor based exercise classes utilising core and torso strength and conditioning exercises, developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. As of 2005, there were 11 million people practicing the discipline regularly. The Pilates method seeks to increase the strength, flexibility and control of the body. Pilates is a body conditioning routine that helps to not only build flexibility, but also strength, endurance, and coordination in the legs, abdominals, arms and back.


During the day our gym is used by the students of the College’s Sports, Fitness and Public Services courses and provides the main learning environment for the College’s part time Fitness courses.

The gym is open to the public Monday – Thursday 5.15pm – 8.45pm, Friday 5.15pm – 8.15pm and Saturday 9.00am – 12.00pm. Public sessions cost £4.00, an induction is needed before use.


The studio is also utilised by our full time Sport and Public Services courses.

It sees everything from circuit class instruction to uniformed services drills.

The studio also hosts staff sessions and the highly successful Mini Olympics for schools.

Climbing Wall

The purpose built climbing wall is used by Outdoor Adventure courses and opened up to other students through our comprehensive enrichment programme. Students on the Outdoor courses learn all the skills to go out and qualify as a climbing wall instructor – great experience for their CVs.

Sports Hall

During the day our Sports Hall is used for practical indoor sports such as Basketball, Netball, and five-a-side football and other activities such as uniformed services drills and employment fairs. It also hosts external bookings for archery / basketball and volleyball.

Football Academy

Our Academy is based in SPS and linked with Havant and Waterlooville FC.  The South Downs Hawks are undoubtedly the best College Academy team in the country. Students are enrolled on a BTEC National in Sport and participate in first class coaching.

Rebound Sports Massage Clinic

The College are not currently running a massage clinic but are looking to re-launch it October 2016.

Mini Olympics

Managed directly by the curriculum manager the Mini Olympics sees one whole week of schools activities in the Sports Hall and Studio. Local school children between of ages 5 and 11 participate in events and activities run by the students on Sport and Public Services courses. The students themselves use the Mini Olympics to complete parts of their course, gaining excellent experience along the way. Oh, and the kids love it!
