South Downs College Fitness Centre is open to the public and includes a fully equipped gym and studio for exercise classes.
Whether your goal is fitness, weight loss or bulking up, we have the equipment, knowledge and staff to help you achieve it.
The Fitness Centre is under the management of the Sport and Public Services
department and a highly experienced Curriculum Manager, Yvonne Elliott.
The Centre is managed for Yvonne by Phill Grimes (who has years of experience
managing in the Fitness Industry).
The gym is supervised by qualified Fitness Instructors or Personal Trainers. The classes are run by qualified instructors.
The centre has three technicians that look after the day to day running:
Claire Turner looks after fitness operations.
Mike Murtagh is responsible for Health and Safety, Work Experience and the new 'SDC
in the community.'
Rikki Smith is responsible for the public gym and is our resident Personal Trainer.
The remainder of attendants are students on Sport, Fitness and Public Services courses;
gaining valuable experience for their CVs.

Pilates
Is a floor based exercise classes utilising core and torso strength and conditioning exercises, developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. As of 2005, there were 11 million people practicing the discipline regularly. The Pilates method seeks to increase the strength, flexibility and control of the body. Pilates is a body conditioning routine that helps to not only build flexibility, but also strength, endurance, and coordination in the legs, abdominals, arms and back.
Body Combat
Body Combat is a cardio workout class inspired by martial arts and draws from a wide array of disciplines such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai. Supported by driving music; you strike, punch, kick and kata your way through calories to superior cardio fitness. New music and choreography is produced every three months.
Zumba
Inspired by traditional salsa, samba and merengue paired with Latin rhythms and international dance steps Zumba (Spanish slang for “to move fast and have fun”) was born!
It has become one of the fastest-growing, dance-based fitness crazes in the country, with people of all ages following its easy-to-follow dance moves.
Gym
During the day our gym is used by the students of the College’s Sports, Fitness
and Public Services courses and provides the main learning environment for the College’s
part time Fitness courses.
The gym is open to the public during term time Mon-Fri 5.30pm-9.00pm. Public sessions
cost £2.00 and include an induction.
The gym is also available to students during lecturer supervised sessions during
the day.
Studio
The studio is also utilised by our full time Sport and Public Services courses.
It sees everything from circuit class instruction to ‘Les Mills’ classes such as
Body Pump and Body Combat to uniformed services drills.
The studio also hosts staff sessions and the highly successful Mini Olympics for
schools.
From September the studio sees the introduction of public classes of the ‘Les Mills’
programmes, namely: Body Pump, Body Combat and Body Attack. Classes will cost £3.50
Climbing Wall
The purpose built climbing wall is used by Outdoor Adventure courses and opened
up to other students through our comprehensive enrichment programme. Students on
the Outdoor courses learn all the skills to go out and qualify as a climbing wall
instructor - great experience for their CVs.
Sports Hall
During the day our Sports Hall is used for practical indoor sports such as Basketball,
Netball, and five-a-side football and other activities such as uniformed services
drills and employment fairs. It also hosts external bookings for Archery/ Wheelchair
Basketball/Netball.
Football Academy
Football Academy Our Academy is based in SPS and linked with Havant and Waterlooville
FC. The Football Academy programme is managed for Yvonne by Stuart Page (a highly
experienced FA coach who has worked for a number of Professional Football clubs).
The South Downs Hawks are undoubtedly the best College Academy team in the country.
Students are enrolled on a BTEC National in Sport and participate in first class
coaching.
Golf Academy
Golf Academy A new addition to SPS with links to Furzeley Golf Club in Denmead and
Portsmouth Golf Club. Budding golfers enrol on a BTEC National Diploma in Sport
and also receive tuition from Furzeley’s golf professional.
‘Up & Running’ Sports Massage Clinic
In action on a Monday night ‘Up & Running’ is a fully functional Sports Massage
clinic. It is operated by the students of the Sports Massage course and managed
by James Florance, an experienced Sport Therapy Professional.
Enrichment
This is a huge programme of extra curricular activities managed out of SPS by Carol
Iggleden and Claire Hooper. The activities range from gym sessions and sport to
languages and creative arts.
Mini Olympics
Managed directly by the curriculum manager the Mini Olympics sees one whole week
of schools activities in the Sports Hall and Studio. Local school children between
of ages 5 and 11 participate in events and activities run by the students on Sport
and Public Services courses. The students themselves use the Mini Olympics to complete
parts of their course, gaining excellent experience along the way. Oh and the kids
love it!
SDC in the community
A new addition to SPS and the Fitness Centre. This project aims to introduce children’s
activity and coaching sessions during school summer holidays. This session is run
by Mike Murtagh.
As well as being one of the technicians, Mike is also a Level 2 Football Coach and
is involved with a couple of Portsmouth community coaching projects.
Get Set
The College has now been accepted into the Get Set Network after submitting an action
plan which was approved by the 2012 organising committee. Get Set is the official
London 2012 education programme for schools, colleges and local authority education
providers across the UK. As a College we are proud to be recognised as a member
of this prestigious organisation. The Sport and Public Services curriculum are leading
this initiative on behalf of the College.
What is the Get Set network?
The Get Set network is a special community of schools and colleges which are:
- Demonstrating a commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values of respect, friendship,
equality, excellence, inspiration, courage and determination.
- Using the London 2012 Games to inspire learners of all ages and abilities to get
involved in Values-based projects and activities.
The network is made up of learning providers who are demonstrably living one or
more of the Olympic and Paralympic Values and are committed to integrating these
Values into their whole school development planning and ethos.

- To take the magic and inspiration of the London 2012 Games out to classrooms, playgrounds
and into the lives of young people across the UK.
- To support children and young people across the UK in the development of their leadership,
personal, thinking and life skills.
Bridging the Gap
Bridging the Gap is a project set up to train stewards for the London 2012 Olympic
and Paralympic Games.
The project is designed for students undertaking a course of study in Public Services,
Sport and Travel and Tourism.
All students who successfully complete this course will be guaranteed an interview
for employment at the London 2012 Olympics.
Students will also have other employment
opportunities at other top sporting events.
Netball
Our staff netball team plays in the Portsmouth League. We also have links with Havant
Hawks who train at South Downs College and have 3 teams in the Portsmouth League.
