ICT (Games Development or Web and Multimedia) – BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma
You need to have a strong interest in Information and Communication Technology and also want to develop practical and theoretical skills in the following areas: - Games Development - Web Page Design - Use of IT in Business and Commerce You may be looking for a job in the software industry or be considering further studies such as a degree or HND in ICT.
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade A*-C including Mathematics or English.
This is a two-year course consisting of a maximum of 18 assessed units. There is a common first year with the system support support students and this will include subjects such as Communication and Employability, Computer Systems, Information Systems, Software Design and Development, Website Production and Management, Human Computer Interaction, Database Design, Systems Analysis and Design, Event Driven Programming.
Upon successful completion of the first year you will be able to choose to complete your studies specialising in either Games Development, Web and Multimedia or transfer to Hardware and Networking.
In your second year, you will study nine units specifically related to Games Development or Web Design and Multimedia. Dependent on choice these units include subjects such as; Computer Game Platforms and Technologies, 3D Modelling, Developing Computer Games, Object Oriented Programming, Databases, Games Design, Graphics, Multimedia, Interactive Media Authoring, Web Animation and Client Side Customisation of Web Pages, e-Commerce, Project Planning for IT.
You will have full use of the facilities available on the South Downs network including Microsoft Office, Programming Languages, Multimedia Packages and Internet facilities.
Years one and two will each address nine units, Personal Finance and a tutorial to enable students to achieve the full Diploma. Most of the material will involve hands-on use of the computer and practical activities.
A BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma is awarded to students who successfully complete nine first year units and a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma on completion of nine specific second year units, all of which are assessed by assignments and portfolio work.
A BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma for IT Practitioners (Software Development). It is equivalent to three A levels and is suitable for entry to a higher education course. The course is graded Pass, Merit and Distinction.
Students may choose to go onto higher education or take up jobs and training schemes with local companies in a Design/Programming/Analysis role.
Students, aged over 19 on the 1 September of the year the course commences will be required to pay tuition and examination/assessment fees.
There are a number of grants available for students on low incomes and for those studying on a first time qualification. Details will be given at interview.
