Hairdressing – Level 3 Diploma (VRQ)
This is a one year program designed to develop both your Hairdressing and creative skills to a more advanced level.
You will need an NVQ/Diploma at Level 2 in Hairdressing. The successful candidate will have an excellent attendance record and skill base. Salon experience would be beneficial, however it is not essential. Skills testing prior to course commencement may be required.
This course will enable you to develop creative cutting using a combination of techniques. Further skills will include advanced colouring techniques, styling and dressing hair creatively.
This exciting course will allow you the opportunity to showcase your Hairdressing skills in a professional Hair Show.
This is a high level qualification; you will be expected to do a considerable amount of work in your own time.
Part time employment in the Hairdressing industry would be an advantage. However, work experience in a salon will take place as part of your course.
As part of the course you will be expected to undertake skills development which may include studies in English and Maths.
Practical – Practical assessment will be carried out on paying clients in the training Salon. All practical work carried out will need to be recorded via a digital camera to form the evidence to be included with your portfolio. Attempts at assessment are made when you feel you have a good chance of successfully meeting the performance criteria. Assessments are recorded in your assessment book. Throughout the course you will need to keep records of the work you complete, so that these may be used to form the basis of your portfolio.
Exams – There is a mixture of exams which are in the form of on-line-testing. There is also a considerable amount of project, assignment and portfolio work for this course.
Homework – Homework is set as a revision task for on-line testing you will also be required to complete a client write-up.
You will need a kit of professional hairdressing equipment which can be purchased on course commencement and a compulsory uniform. For theory classes you will need paper, pens, pencils and an A4 ring binder for theory notes. Additional equipment requirements will be discussed at interview.
Level 3 in Hairdressing.
Employment within the hairdressing industry at a more senior level, or on cruise liners.
The level of this course requires students to be well motivated and to be able to take responsibility for their own learning.
There will be a considerable amount of additional work required outside of course hours. This could involve research, rehearsal, attendance at professional seminars, etc.
This course is designed to provide as wide a range of hairdressing experiences as possible. Facial piercings are not acceptable in the Salon and must be removed before entering a practical class. Uniform is to be worm at all times to all theory and practical classes.
Additional Costs- there may be costs involved for attendance on trips, and examination fees.

Students, aged over 19 on the 1 September of the year the course commences will be required to pay tuition and examination/assessment fees. There are a number of grants available for students on low incomes and for those studying on a first time qualification.
This course no longer attracts government funding subsidy for students aged 24 or above on the start date of this course. To help pay for these fees you may be entitled to the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan.
