Electrical And Electronic Engineering 2 Units (Optional) – HND Diploma

The course is for students who wish to obtain a qualification in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Thus a higher education course is ideal for those wishing to gain a higher qualification or those wishing to go on to university to complete a degree. This course is ideal for students in the electronics industry who wish to gain a higher education qualification. This is year 1 of a two year course. The HNC can be taken as a stand-alone qualification or can be taken before progressing to the HND course. This flowchart outlines the two possible study routes:

Entry Requirements

Students should normally possess, for post 2010 qualifications a Level 3 Diploma or Level 3 Extended Diploma or higher in an Engineering discipline with a Merit/Merit profile or better. For pre 2010 qualifications a BTEC National Certificate in an Engineering discipline with Merits in Maths & Science, or relevant work experience.

Applications from students with other qualifications for example A levels or C&G, or mature students will be considered on merit and all such applicants will need an interview.

Course Content

The HNC consists of 8 units studied over two years part time, day release basis.
In Year 1 you will study 5 units:
– Analytical Methods for Engineers
– Engineering Science
– Electrical and Electronic Measurement and Testing
– Principles and Applications of Microcontrollers
– Engineering Design

In Year 2 you will study a further 3 units:
– Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation
– Electrical and Electronic Principles
– Programmable Logic Controllers

This level of study requires additional hours allocated each week outside of college for research and writing reports.

This qualification has been designed by Edexcel (Pearsons) and is in line with the QCF and relevant FHEQ benchmarks.

You will work closely with a highly qualified team from both academic and industry-based backgrounds. The course will be delivered in a variety of learning situations, lectures, one-to-one tuition, tutorials and workshops with a focus on independent learning development.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment procedure for each unit, except the project unit, involves in-course tests, end-of-unit tests and the carrying out of a programme of assignments; the project is assessed as though it were a multi-stage assignment. All assessment procedures are subject to scrutiny by an external Examiner appointed by the Awarding Body.

The student must satisfy the internal and external Examiner that he/she has reached a Pass grade, as a minimum, at all stages of the assessment programme. The final unit grade for each student will be an accumulation of grades obtained at all stages of the assessment programme. Assignments are graded at Pass, Merit, or Distinction, with students ideally aiming for Merit or Distinction.

Students who start Year 2 of HNC Electronics can also study for 2 units of the HND Electronics course on the same day (course code T210/152USA). These 2 units can then be carried forward to the following year where a remaining 6 units will be completed. If you intend to start the HND course, you must enrol on the 2 unit course.

What qualifications will I get?

Successful candidates will gain an Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

What will it allow me to do in the future?

You will need to complete the second year of this course to gain the full HNC. Satisfactory completion of the course can lead on to a Foundation Degree or a University Degree in any one of a number of engineering disciplines.

Intended learning outcomes and aims of the programme

Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals are designed to provide a specialist vocational programme, linked to professional body requirements and National Occupational Standards where appropriate.

They offer a strong, sector-related emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding.

The qualifications provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in their sector and their national recognition by employers allows direct progression to employment.

A key progression path for Edexcel BTEC HNC and HND learners is to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme, depending on the match of the Edexcel BTEC Higher National units to the degree programme in question.

The BTEC Higher Nationals in Electrical and Electronic Engineering have been developed to focus on:
– the education and training of electrical/electronic engineers/technicians who are employed at a professional level in a variety of types of technical work, such as in: electrical, electronic or communication design, manufacture, maintenance and technical services areas of the engineering industry
– providing opportunities for electrical/electronic engineers/technicians to achieve a nationally recognised Level 4 or Level 5 vocationally specific qualification
– providing opportunities for learners to focus on the development of the higher level skills in a technological and management context
– providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

This qualification meets the needs of the above rationale by:

  • developing a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in working life and thereby enable learners to make an immediate contribution to employment at the appropriate professional level preparing individuals for a range of technical and management careers in electrical, electronic or communication engineering
  • equipping individuals with knowledge, understanding and skills for success in employment in the electrical/electronic engineering-based industry
  • providing specialist studies relevant to individual vocations and professions in which learners are working or intend to seek employment in electrical/electronic engineering and its related industries
  • enabling progression to or count towards an undergraduate degree or further professional qualification in electrical/electronic engineering or related area
