Craft Catering City and Guilds Level 1

This course is aimed at students aged between 16 and 19, who have an interest in the Catering and Hospitality industry or wish to retrain and acquire skills for entry into this industry. Your likely career will be working in a professional Kitchen or Restaurant. You must have ambition, drive and a commitment to succeed in a very competitive industry.

Entry Requirements

Mainly D grade GCSEs, genuine enthusiasm, hard work and a good  school  record. Good punctuality and attendance are essential, as well as the ability to research and create assignments.

Course Content

The course will develop your skills in professional cookery and restaurant service to a level which will enable you to be prepared for a future in the hospitality industry. In addition students will be taught Food Hygiene, Basic Health & Safety and associated employment skills.

How will I be taught?

Learning will be provided by lectures, workshops, visits, team teaching and demonstration with the emphasis on the real world of work.

There will be opportunities to prepare, cook and serve food in our award winning restaurant and cafe bar.

Be aware there is a requirement to be able to get to College at 8.00am on certain days on your timetable, as there are early classes.

Assessment will take place on assignment, short answer tests, practical restaurant assessments and practical cookery tests.

What qualifications will I get?

On completion of the course, you will gain:

City & Guilds (7100-11) Level 1 Diploma in Introduction to Professional Cookery

City & Guilds (7103-05) Certificate in Professional Food & Beverage Service

Additional qualifications include:

Food Hygiene and Functional Skills in Maths & English.

GCSE English or Maths for individuals that have not achieved up to a C grade at school.

This program will also prepare you for the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery & City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Professional Food & Beverage Service.

What will it allow me to do in the future?

On successful completion of this course, you should progress onto the VRQ Level 2 course to further enhance your skills, knowledge and employability or you may seek an apprenticeship in the catering industry.

Course Information

Part of your program will include work placement in top local outlets as part of our ‘Catering for your Future’ program , Both your College program and  placement will involve some evening activity.

Students, aged over 19 on the 1 September of the year the course commences will be required to pay tuition and examination/assessment fees. There are a number of grants available for students on low incomes and for those studying on a first time qualification. Details will be given at interview.
