Childrens Care, Learning and Development – BTEC Level 2 Diploma

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma is a full time course and is suitable for school leavers (16-18 year olds) who would like a career working with children. It prepares you for employment and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a genuine interest in working with children; they will need to have at least one of the following:

– English Language or Mathematics at grade C or above and three other GCSE subjects at grade D or above

– Proof of a successful work placement within a childcare/primary school setting is essential prior to enrolment on this course

– Other related Level 1 or 2 qualifications may be considered

Course Content

You will learn about all aspects of childcare.

The course is made up of six units – five core units and one specialist unit that everyone takes. The specialist unit enables you to study a particular area in more depth.

As well as your days in College you will have one day in a placement gaining work experience. You will also undertake placement days, to achieve the 300 hours work experience required to complete the course.

The units are:

Understanding Children’s Development

Keeping Children Safe

Communication with Children and Adults

Preparing and Maintaining Environments for Child Care

Professional Development, Roles and Responsibilities in Child Care

The specialist unit will be Providing Support for Children with Disabilities or Special Educational Needs.

How will I be taught?

The course is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. There are 300 hours (minimum) that must be completed in the workplace to achieve this award.

How will I be assessed?

All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded at pass merit and distinction. Students will develop their personal study skills and be given opportunities to research and show initiative.

Will I need any extra equipment?


What qualifications will I get?

A BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development, which is equivalent to four GCSEs at grades A*-C.

What will it allow me to do in the future?

Successful completion with a predominantly Distinction profile and an appropriate reference from your tutor could enable you to progress on to the BTEC National Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning & Development. Alternatively students can apply for jobs within the childcare sector.

Course Information

Students, aged over 19 on the 1 September of the year the course commences will be required to pay tuition and assessment fees. If you are in receipt of an income based benefit please ask about financial assistance, which may be available.

As work experience is a key feature of this course, you will need to make a formal Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure by completing a form that will be sent to you when you are offered a place on the course. This is because you may be working in an environment with children, young people and vulnerable adults. You may have to pay for this check to be completed.
