Business – HND Diploma (Year 1 of 2)
The course is franchised from the University of Portsmouth and is for students who wish to have: - An opportunity to continue onto university to gain a top-up degree in the third year. - The latest in knowledge and skills for a changing business environment.
All candidates have to be aged over 18 and with one of the following academic qualifications (please note – they do not have to be related to Business Studies):
– 120 points at A/AS level (minimum grade D at A level) or Edexcel
National Certificate qualification
– NVQ3 to Pass level
– Access to Higher Education to Pass level
– Key Skills at Level 3
– Aged over 21 with relevant industrial/commercial experience
In addition you should have English and Mathematics to a grade C at GCSE standard.
The University of Portsmouth’s HND Business qualification has been designed and updated by the Business School and is in line with the QCF and relevant FHEQ benchmarks. All students achieve the award once they have accumulated 240 credits. This is normally achieved after 2 years of full time study.
In the first semester, the following four compulsory units are taken:
– Business Finance
– Organisational Theory
– Business Environment
In second semester of the course there is one compulsory unit:
– Business Law
Students must also complete at least three option units from.
– Management Accounts
– Human Resources Management
– Applied Marketing
– Small Business Enterprise
In the first semester, students must study the following compulsory unit:
– Data Management
In addition, students must choose at least 2 options from the following
– Employer Relations
– Human Resource Development
– Principles of Purchasing
In the second semester, students must study the following compulsory unit:
– Business Strategy
In addition they must choose at least 2 options from the following
– Business Excellence
– Project management
– Working With & Leading People
Lastly, all students have to complete a 5000 word, business related Research Project, which develops skills and analytical tools required for a final year Dissertation in an Honours Degree
Studying at Level 4 and 5 requires students to attend all lectures and commit themselves to additional hours allocated each week outside of college for research and writing reports. Students will also develop team working skills over the course in addition to individual learning requirements. The University’s Academic Skills Unit is available for support and advice to all HND Business students and must be used to help complement the learning undertaken at the College.
At South Downs College, you will work closely with a highly qualified team with both academic and industry-based backgrounds. The course will be delivered in a variety of learning situations, lectures, one-to-one tuition, tutorials and workshops with a focus on independent learning development.
The course will be delivered using a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, utilising the College’s latest learning resources. These will include CD roms, contemporary business software and the latest business periodicals.
How does South Downs College (red) compare to the rest of the country (grey)?
Assessment is by a combination of final and continuous assessment which are set by the University of Portsmouth. These are work-based and are designed to build on the latest business theories.
Higher National Diploma in Business awarded by the University of Portsmouth.
Successful completion of the course can lead to:
– Third Year BA (Honours) Business top-up degrees. These can be tailored to fit specific vocational pathways at the University of Portsmouth in Personnel, Marketing and Administration.
– Specific professional courses including the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
Additional Costs – Textbooks, vocational visits and residentials.
