British Sign Language Level 1 Award

This part time sign language course will teach you how to communicate through British Sign Language (BSL). You will gain basic skills and confidence in simple everyday use of BSL. It is ideal if you wish to learn a new language skill, want to progress to further advanced study of BSL or have Deaf friends, family or colleagues you would like to communicate with.

Entry Requirements

This Level one British Sign Language course can be taken without any previous BSL experience. However, due to the nature of BSL learners are required to have sufficient sight and physical dexterity.

Course Content

British Sign language (BSL) has been officially recognised as a language in its own right since March 2003 and is the first or preferred language of an estimated 70,000 Deaf people in the UK.

During this part-time course you will learn the basics of British Sign Language, and by the end of the course you will be confident in the following:

  • Understanding and using a range of simple words and sentences in BSL
  • Taking part in everyday BSL conversations
  • Giving and following simple directions, instructions and descriptions in BSL
How will I be taught?

This sign language evening course will be taught in a classroom environment, led by a qualified deaf teacher whose first language is British Sign Language.

How will I be assessed?

This course is divided into three units, the first unit (BSL101) is internally assessed, whereas the following two units (BSL102 and BLS103) are externally assessed.

 

Will I need any extra equipment?

Only a pen and paper

What qualifications will I get?

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a Level one award in British Sign Language.

What will it allow me to do in the future?

Following the completion of this course you can progress onto a Level two certificate in British Sign Language. Having a basic understanding of BSL can have a positive impact on future employment opportunities.
